- And Finally, Things Got A Little Awkward is brought to us this week by State v. Belt, in which Scott Belt, the president of the county board of supervisors, presides over the worst/greatest town hall meeting in Iowa history. He gets hammered drunk at the bar next door to the county building, takes a “to-go cup of his cocktail and a straw” to the meeting, where he stumbles up to the podium and gives an “incoherent speech” before requesting a moment of silence to, “pray for the troops, their grandkids and whatever is going on in their lives.” While being escorted off-stage, he stops behind presenter Suzanne Watson and begins “patting and rubbing her back before trying to talk to her.” He then loudly fights with law enforcement in the room next door. He is, of course, terminated. But, this being a post-shame age, he fights it all the way up to the state supreme court. His defense? So glad you asked. His 20 years of service should not be outweighed by “ten minutes of awkwardness.” “Ten minutes of awkwardness” is, coincidentally, how Your Editor charitably characterizes his romantic endeavors.
